Filipino students of the Philippine national robotics team led by Dr. Yanga Colleges Inc. Primes won gold and bronze medals in this year’s World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Dortmund, Germany.
The DYCI Primes team, comprised of junior high school students Annette Nicole Ambi, Gabriel Ortega, and Leslie Guadalupe of Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. in Bulacan, won the Gold Score Ranking and Bronze Award for Future Innovators (Junior HS Level) in the international robotics tilt for students.
The gold-winning team was recognized for their Aiding the Mute-Deaf towards Inclusivity Through Communication and Understanding the Society (AMICUS) Robot. This inclusive invention aims to be a friend to deaf and mute individuals by helping them break down communication barriers in everyday life.
Six other Philippine schools won bronze medals and Top 10 honors in the annual science and technology event and competition held in November 2022.
The following Philippine robotics teams joined DYCI Primes in bagging awards:
- Betty Go Elementary School (DepEd Quezon City), Bronze, Robot Mission (Elementary level)
- Marie Ernestine School (Cebu), Bronze, Robot Mission (Junior High School level)
- Grace Christian College (Quezon City), Bronze, Robot Mission (Senior High School level)
- Project 6 Elementary School (DepEd Quezon City), Bronze, Future Innovators (Elementary Level)
- Columban College Barretto (Olongapo ), Bronze Future Innovators (Senior HS Level)
- City of Naga Enhanced Special Science & Technology HS (Cebu), Top 10, Robo Sports
The Filipino students competed among 375 teams from 73 countries that participated in 4 different categories in the robotics tilt held from November 14 to 21.
This year’s competition theme, “My Robot, My Friend”, tasked teams to develop robot models that represent the robot as a friend and helper in the daily life of people.
The WRO is an annual international robotics competition for students aged 8 to 19 years. The competition aims to promote robotics in STEM education worldwide and help develop young people’s creativity, design, and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational robot competitions and activities.
Student teams from Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. have been winning gold medals in robotics for the Philippines, including the WRO Canada 2020-X tournament, the 2019 WRO in Hungary, and the FIRST LEGO League Open in Turkey, among others.
