Filipino Muaythai athletes trained from the grassroots together won 10 medals for the Philippines at the 2022 International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) Youth World Championships held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
All 8 members of the Philippine delegation’s Team Bagsik earned medals from the tournament, bringing home 7 gold medals and 3 silver medals.
The Filipino fighters were among the athletes from over 80 countries who took part in the IFMA Muaythai events held from August 9 to August 21.
Gold and silver medalist Jasmine Dagame expressed her joy at winning medals in her first competition outside the country. “Sobrang saya po lalo na first time ko po magcompete internationally, tapos po may naiuwi pa po akong gold medal. Ayun po nakakaproud po sa sarili,” she said in a Philippine Sports Commission report.
[It was fun, especially since it was my first time competing internationally, and then I brought home a gold medal. That makes you proud of yourself.]
Coach Precious Ocaya-Delarmino praised the achievement of the grassroots athletes. “Syempre po sobrang nakakaproud yung mga bata kasi lahat po sila first time mag compete international, and maganda po kasi galing sila sa grassroots. Kaya makikita natin yung progress from grassroots.“
[Of course, I’m very proud of the children because they all compete internationally for the first time, and it’s good because they come from the grassroots and we will see the progress from the grassroots.]
Dagame overpowered Iran and India before getting the gold medal. Her coach credited the win against Muaythai powerhouse Iran to her ward’s good preparation.
Coach Ocaya-Delarmino said the team’s participation at the IFMA World Youth Championships is good preparation for the young athletes who will go up to the senior level. She also credited the Muaythai Association of the Philippines program that allows athletes to compete against strong countries.
