Filipina nurse Potri Ranka Manis who had experienced racial hate crime has been appointed to serve on the New York City government’s newly formed Asian Affairs Advisory Council.

Manis made the news headlines when she was assaulted and harassed in an anti-Asian hate incident while distributing free masks on a subway in New York in August 2021.

The Mindanao native and founder of dance company Kinding Sindaw is an award-winning poet and playwright who has been actively involved in issues affecting Filipino and Asian-American communities.

Manis is the only Filipino on the council established to advise the Mayor’s office regarding issues affecting the Asian community.

“I was not surprised when I was told that Potri was recently appointed by New York City Mayor Eric Adams as a member of the newly formed Asian Affairs Advisory Council,” Consul General Elmer Cato wrote in a Facebook post on August 31, 2022.

According to the Consul General of the Philippine Consulate General in New York, the council will serve as a bridge between the City Hall and the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities.

The members of the Council will also advise New York City Mayor Eric Adams on key issues such as public safety, economic recovery, and education.

Three Filipina leaders were officially appointed to be members of United States President Joe Biden’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) to combat anti-Asian hate and violence in the United States.

These Filipino American stars are using their voices to call for a stop to anti-Asian discrimination and hate crimes in the United States.
