Cebuana figure skaters Erphy Claire MacKenzie and Dawn Jasmine Gothong led Team Philippines’ harvest of 28 gold medals at the Skate Asia 2022 held in Malaysia.
Team Philippines’ delegation of 13 skaters brought home a total of 45 medals, including 28 golds, 13 silvers, and 4 bronze medals from the skating competition held at Sunway Pyramid from August 6 to 14.
The 7-year-old MacKenzie brought home 6 gold medals from all her events in Freestyle, Footwork, Artistic, Open Freeskate, Solo Competition, and Jump and Spin.
The 9-year-old Gothong earned 5 gold for the Philippines in the following categories: Artistic, Mixed Footwork, Jump and Spin, Technical, and Solo compulsories, and 1 silver in Open Freestyle.
MacKenzie went on Facebook to express her gratitude and joy at the outstanding performance of the Philippine team. She also recalled how she felt during the competition. “At some point, I’m overly excited, but also, people around me could tell I was also nervous. I wanted to win. I came to fight and win for that gold, but mama said, that’s just a plus. It’s how I felt & reacted before, during, and after each of my programs that matter most. I enjoyed each of my performances and apparently, that made me a winner more than anything else. But hard work truly pays off. Six out of six gold medals for myself, my coaches, and my team this time.”
