A Tamaraw-inspired bag has given Neil Capistrano and Mark Boni Marter of the startup fashion brand Neil & Marter the distinction of making history by becoming the first Filipinos to win the international Design-A-Bag (DAB) Competition.

Capistrano and Marter’s winning piece, the Amara Bag, was declared the overall winner and bested entries around the world in the 2022 edition of the global bag design competition’s 10-year history.

The Filipino designers of the Quezon City-based fashion brand came up with their winning sustainable bag design entry to boost awareness for the environment and help save the critically endangered buffalo species and Philippine national icon, the tamaraw, also known as the Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo.

The team’s Amara Circular Bag is made of leather oddments and other materials and aims to make a statement through sustainable fashion. The bag’s horn detailing is reminiscent of the tamaraw, one of the world’s rarest and most endangered buffalo species endemic only to Mindoro in the Philippines.

The Capistrano and Marter’s bag creation was declared the overall winner in the contest’s final judging event held at the Dubai World Trade Center in the United Arab Emirates on March 31, 2022.

The Design-A-Bag (DAB) Competition is the only global online bag design event of its kind for freelance designers and design students. The competition is organized by Fashion Access and Arsutoria School who also sponsors the event.

Filipino brands making an impact through sustainable fashion include the Filipino fashion brand, Bayo, and Palawan-based company AraPilak.

SEND CONGRATULATIONS in the comments below to designers Neil Capistrano and Mark Boni Marter of the startup fashion brand Neil & Marter for making history in the international Design-A-Bag (DAB) Competition for their sustainable bag design inspired by the critically endangered Tamaraw buffalo species endemic to Mindoro in the Philippines.
