University of Santo Tomas (UST) Medical Technology students Jefson Romeo Felix and Maria Rosario Isabel Seares won first place in the 2nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Youth Social Journalism Contest for their public health-centered digital publication, Juan Health PH.
Felix and Seares represented the Philippines and topped this year’s winners of the regional tilt with the theme, “#ASEANYouth and COVID-19 -Response, Recovery, and Resilience”, ASEAN Foundation announced on August 31.
The duo launched Juan Health PH as their official flagship project for the competition and social media campaign to boost health literacy among Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Felix and Seares’ initiative is a youth-led community and health-centered publication dedicated to spreading accessible and factual information across different social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
With the motto “empowered youth citizen journalists for truth, knowledge, equity, and social responsibility,” the digital publication prides itself in upholding scientific truths in the new normal and amplifying the voices of the Filipino people.
Since June, the publication has published over a hundred articles and news updates and continues to address the latest and most relevant issues concerning public health dilemmas in the Philippines, such as misinformation and vaccination hesitancy, among others.
Aside from bagging the top honors in the contest, the Filipino student journalists will take home a cash prize of $1000 (approximately Php50,000).
The ASEAN Youth Social Journalism Contest (AYSJ) 2021 called on youth “Social Journalists” to submit essays and campaign ideas to help communities in the region amid the health crisis.
UP Diliman student Camille Joyce Lisay and Lyceum’s Joaquin Victor Tacla won the 2019 edition of the AYSJ for their social media campaign, “4Ps for Philippines”.
Another UST Journalism student, Alodia Berzel A. Laguardia, won the press award at the Asia World Model United Nations in Bali, Indonesia.
