Pope Francis has appointed Filipino priest Albino Barrera as a new member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences in the Vatican.
Fr. Barrera’s appointment as an ordinary member of the Academy was announced by the Vatican’s Holy See bulletin on September 14, 2021.
Barrera is a professor of economics and moral theology at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.
Born in Manila, Father Barrera joined the Dominican order and was later ordained to the priesthood in 1993. He studied at De La Salle University and holds a doctorate in economics from Yale University in New Haven and a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC.
In 2015, Barrera was awarded the title of Master in sacred theology by the Minister General of his Order.
Established by Pope John Paul II in 1994, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences is tasked with promoting the study and progress of social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law, and political science.
Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle has been appointed to several Vatican posts including the Congregation for the Eastern Churches and the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.
