Three Filipino public school teachers have won top prizes in this year’s Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education (APTE) Best Practice Contest awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Noel Sadinas from Schools Division Office (SDO) Nueva Vizcaya led the Filipino teachers as a second-place winner in a tie with two Malaysian teachers in the regional competition for teachers from all over the Asia-Pacific held in August.

George Borromeo from SDO Manila and Honey Riza Vega of SDO Cebu City both placed third in a tie with two Malaysians and one Indonesian.

Sadinas, Borromeo, and Vega are among the 18 winners from the UNESCO partner countries.

The three Filpino teachers are all alumni of the Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Programme (KPTEP), a program launched in 2012 in line with APTE to support the enhancement of the quality of education in the Philippines.

“We took these challenges as our weapon to prove that teachers like us can do more and be more. The launching of KPTEP’s local programs opened new doors of opportunities and more support was poured. It is a matter of determination and compassion towards education. It is very fulfilling to claim our achievement with the challenges we have been through,” Teacher Vega said in a statement on September 22, 2021.

Prizes for the winners include the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) Director’s Award, the opportunity to attend the Sharing Stories of Asia-Pacific Education Movements (SSAEM) Conference, and a cash reward.

The UNESCO APTE encouraged KPTEP educators from partner countries to share their stories and experiences through essay submissions, along with photos and video presentations during the program.

Filipino public school teachers who recently received recognition include Noemi Baysa who was earlier recognized by an international organization for her online publication called Project I Commit to Global Citizenship Education through Online Newspaper or “PIGEON”, and two public school teachers from Northern Mindanao (Region X) and the National Capital Region (NCR) awarded for their exemplary work in STEM education for K-12 students.
