Filipino-born global solar movement Liter of Light is creating giant solar artworks of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) to call for urgent action during the Global Week to Act for SDGs.

The transformation of the UN SDGs into large-scale solar Human-Powered Messages of Hope to COP26 from the Philippines carries the organization’s call for a renewed commitment during the SDG Action Week which runs from September 17-28, 2021.

“We are dedicating one week to show our call. We are asking for a renewed commitment to SDGs to battle against poverty. Our efforts suffered a setback when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and it is now urgent that we double-time our efforts to regain our momentum,” explained Illac Diaz, leader of the Liter of Light who is currently in Italy for the pre-COP26 Climate Change Conference where the organization will represent the Philippines.

Edison Award-winning Liter of Light’s founder said the renewed commitment is needed since many indicators were left behind when worldwide efforts prioritized the battle against the coronavirus.

“Instead of creating poverty, together we can create a people power approach to global goals,” Diaz shared in an interview with the Liter of Light’s Messages of Hope media partner, GoodNewsPilipinas.com.

The solar energy social enterprise posted on September 22 the Messages of Hope video of its first SDG solar giant installation made of hand-built solar lamps from the Asia Pacific Social Innovation and Partnership-awarded Light it Forward challenge.

The first large-scale solar artwork features SDG #2 Zero Hunger carrying the call to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition.

“Did you know that today, there are 820 million people that are undernourished or living in hunger? That’s nearly 10% of the ENTIRE global population. We dream of a world where everyone has access to quality nutrition, where what we eat is easily and sustainably grown, and where no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from,” Liter of Light captioned the video posted on social media.

“That’s why we’ve been building these large-scale Messages of Hope with our hand-built solar lights – from our home in the Philippines, we want to shed a light on the work that’s already being done for the SDGs, and also to call on us to do our part to build a more sustainable world. We can – we must – do more.”

The SDG #2 Zero Hunger solar installation was built at the University of the Philippines Diliman football field and hosted by the College of Human Kinetics through Dean Francisco Carlos Diaz in partnership with Mache Torres and the Rotary Club of Makati Business District, D3830 – Philippines.

Liter of Light today released its 2nd SDG solar artwork, SDG #14 Life Below Water created at the SM Mall of Asia sponsored by SM Cares.

“Did you know? Our oceans are the planet’s life support system and help to regulate the climate. But they have also absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat in our climate system.

“That’s a huge threat to the millions of species that call our oceans home, our food systems, our health, and our livelihoods.

“We in the Philippines are no strangers to the effects of climate change on our oceans and marine life. With each passing year, sea levels are rising, storms are becoming more intense, and our waters are filled with pollution, destroying our beautiful ocean flora and fauna.

“That’s why we are calling attention to #SDG14: to conserve and sustainably use the world’s ocean, sea, and marine resources. We can – we must – do better.”

The 2021 Messages of Hope to COP26 project is a continuation of the 2020 Good Light Messages of Hope collaboration between Liter of Light and GoodNewsPilipinas.com which had Diaz and his family create solar billboards of messages sent in by Filipinos under lockdown to inspire the world to survive the Covid-19 pandemic.

Diaz is now in Milan, Italy to represent the country in the pre-COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference and is calling for netizens to post tweets to raise awareness on climate change.

Tweets tagging the Human-Powered Messages of Hope to COP26 on Twitter will be formed into solar billboards in Italy and Scotland.
