SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the property arm of SM Group, has secured LEED Gold certification for seven of its properties as of 2024, marking a significant achievement in sustainable real estate development. The company continues to work toward green certification across its portfolio, aligning its growth with climate action and disaster resilience.
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is the world’s foremost green building rating system. Earning a Gold level designation, the second highest available, demands a rigorous review of a building’s construction and operational practices to meet stringent environmental standards.
“We continue to invest in sustainable designs in our properties. LEED Green certification is an affirmation by independent parties that we are building our properties right and adopting the highest standards. Sustainability for us was never a fad we had to follow. It’s deeply embedded in our core,” shared Engr. Liza B. Silerio, Vice President and Program Director for the Environment at SM Cares, SM Supermalls’ corporate social responsibility arm.
Since 2017, SM’s LEED Gold-certified developments include SM Aura Premier in Taguig, The Podium Complex, SM City Baguio, Mega Tower in Mandaluyong City, Conrad Manila, SM North Tower in Quezon City, and SM Three E-Com Center in the Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. SM accounts for over 15% of the Philippines’ 42 LEED Gold and Platinum-certified properties as of early 2024, a portfolio that spans malls, offices, and hotels.
Notably, SM City Baguio achieved LEED Gold certification in March 2023. The project’s development followed a meticulous process, with SM’s architects and planners ensuring strict compliance with LEED criteria. The expansion’s top five green features include energy efficiency, accessible public transport, water use reduction, water-efficient landscaping, and the use of regionally sourced, recycled materials.
“A successful business is a responsible business,” added Engr. Silerio. “At SM, our commitment to sustainability drives us to design LEED-certified properties both as responsible and strategic decisions to ensure long-term success and resilience.”
In May 2024, Colliers International Group noted that LEED-certified properties create positive business value by aligning environmental and social responsibility with local economic growth.
