50 Dogs Set to Be Shot – One Woman Refused to Stand By
In October 2018, Malou Perez stumbled upon a horrifying scene: 50 dogs slated for execution by gunshot. Unable to bear the thought, she took action. This brave decision led to the creation of the Pawssion Project Foundation Inc., a beacon of hope for abused, abandoned, and neglected animals. Starting in Bacolod, Malou and her dedicated friends embarked on a mission to save these innocent lives. Since then, Pawssion Project has rescued over 2000 animals and found loving homes for more than 600 of them.
Pawssion Project’s journey began with hope and courage. After their initial rescue, the call for help only grew louder. Reports of animals in dire conditions poured in, prompting the opening of a second shelter in Bulacan in mid-2019. Their relentless efforts have shed light on a much larger issue – the widespread abuse and neglect of animals.
Some rescues at Pawssion Project become more than just temporary residents – they become Ambassadogs. These core residents have captured the hearts of everyone and are no longer up for adoption. Instead, they stay at the shelter, where they continue to receive love and care. One such special resident is Lolo Charlie.
Lolo Charlie was rescued during the Taal Volcano eruption on January 12, 2020. He had been hit by a vehicle, leaving his back half paralyzed. Thanks to Pawssion Project, Charlie got a second chance at life. With the help of a donated wheelchair from another dog named Loki, Charlie regained his mobility and found a new owner who gave him a loving home.
The fight against animal cruelty is far from over. Despite the tireless work of the Pawssion Project and other organizations, dogs continue to face execution, and the number of strays is rising. But there’s hope: people with a heart for furry friends will all make a difference.
Republic Act No. 8485, also known as the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 in the Philippines, aims to protect and promote animal welfare by regulating facilities that breed, keep, or treat animals. By spreading awareness of this law, individuals can help enforce it and protect furry friends. Encouraging responsible pet ownership in the community and promoting spaying and neutering are essential to controlling the pet population.

“I don’t have enough words to explain just how beautiful it is to be able to experience the love and gratitude of rescued animals. So really, if everyone will choose to adopt and everyone will be able to experience yung life? Then really we’ll live in a beautiful world,” said Malou Perez on the Pawssion Project YouTube channel.
The road to better animal welfare is long, but the Pawssion Project is committed to being the voice for helpless animals. However, they need all the help they can get. Will you join them? Together, a better future for our furry friends can be created.
