The University of the Philippines (UP) has emerged as a frontrunner among Philippine universities in the 2024 Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) Sustainability Rankings. This prestigious list recognizes global higher educational institutions excelling in social, environmental, and governance impact in sustainability. Alongside UP, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of Santo Tomas (UST), and Mapúa University have also made their mark.
UP, the country’s state university, secured the 231st spot, significantly improving from its previous 401-450 bracket. ADMU followed at #593, with DLSU in the 981-1000 range. UST and Mapúa University were also ranked in the 1001-1050 and 1201+ brackets, respectively. Notably, this year marks the second consecutive appearance for UP and DLSU, while ADMU, UST, and Mapúa have been recognized for the first time.

These institutions were evaluated across three Performance Lenses: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Good Governance. The Social Impact category, weighted at 45%, appreciates universities’ contributions to societal transformation through equality measures and impactful alumni. The Environmental Impact, also at 45%, highlights their role in addressing environmental and climate challenges. The newly introduced Good Governance category, accounting for 10%, underscores the importance of leadership and decision-making in achieving sustainable development goals.
The QS Sustainability Rankings, first released in 2022, provides a unique perspective on institutions committed to a sustainable future. Nearly 1,400 universities worldwide qualified to be ranked, out of over 3,600 scored based on their ability to address environmental, social, and governance challenges. The list released on December 5, 2023, led by the University of Toronto, evaluates universities’ contributions to science and technology, research across the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), and operational sustainability as major educational and research centers.
In a testament to their global academic standing, UP, ADMU, DLSU, and UST were also featured in the QS World University Rankings while Mapúa earned a spot in the QS Asia University Rankings.
