The Voci di Gesù Chamber Singers, hailing from Cavite’s Tierra Nevada Community in General Trias, have yet again raised the Philippine flag high in the international arena. This talented choir achieved remarkable success at the 11th International Jean Sibelius Choir Competition in Turku, Finland, securing two prestigious awards.

With their video entries screened and judged in a challenging online format held on November 13-14, 2023, the Filipino choir excelled among 11 globally recognized groups. Their impressive performance earned them 2nd Place in Folk Music, with no first-place awardee, and 3rd Place in the Mixed Choir category.

Daniel Dumas, the choir’s conductor, shared with Good News Pilipinas the group’s simultaneous preparation for the Busan Choral Festival & Competition in South Korea where four other Filipino choirs dominated the placements. Dumas elaborated on the stringent judging process in Finland, highlighting the European competitions’ strict grading system. “Despite being an online event, the tension was palpable due to the rigorous grading. Securing placements is challenging as each category demands a specific grade. In our Folk Category, we placed 2nd with no first place, making our achievement even more gratifying,” Dumas expressed in Filipino.

The choir, based at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in General Trias, Cavite, aspires to be acknowledged by the “Ani ng Dangal” awards from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Their recent triumphs add to a growing list of international accolades, including double gold prizes each at both the Tokyo International Choir Competition and the Taipei International Choir Competition.
