Palawan in the Philippines made it to the 2023 edition of United States-based Fodor’s Travel Go List, a guide that encourages travelers to visit destinations that deserve spending money and time now that travel restrictions have been lifted to reveal a whole new world.

The 86-year-old travel guide’s first international Go List of 40 recommended destinations since the COVID-19 pandemic struck listed the archipelagic province of Palawan in the MIMAROPA Region for its natural beauty and luxurious offerings for travelers.

“The very definition of eco-luxury, Palawan is one of the Philippines’ most magical islands where underwater worlds meet lush jungles,” wrote Fodor’s Esme Fox.

Fodor’s Travel recommends Palawan as a preferred sustainable destination for travelers, noting how the province’s capital and main city of Puerto Princesa was the first carbon-neutral city in South East Asia and is now actually carbon-negative. The “City in the Forest” is praised for being mostly solar-powered, including the world’s largest solar-powered off-grid shopping mall.

Fodor’s acknowledges one of the main highlights of a Palawan visit to its UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River. The 8.2-kilometer underground waterway is one of the longest in the world and one of the few that flows into the sea, creating the largest subterranean estuary in the world where “Small boats take visitors along the river into the heart of the mountain through the cathedral-like cave system.”

The feature on the popular Philippine tourist spot also recommends going beyond the city limits for the “dazzling coastline, punctuated by dreamy powdery beaches, lagoons, and swathes of jungle. And underneath the waves lie some of the best diving and snorkeling locations on the planet, where underwater coral cities teem with life.”

Fodor’s 6 Top Places To Go In Asia in 2023 names Ayutthaya in Thailand, Bangladesh, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Madhya Pradesh in India, Si Phan Don in Laos, and Palawan in the Philippines.
