Philippine Jins collect 8 gold medals at Asian Taekwondo Championships

Philippine Jins have collected 8 gold medals at the 2022 Asian Cadet, Junior, and Para-Taekwondo Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The SMART/MVP Sports Foundation National Taekwondo team won a total of 19 medals including 8 gold, 1 silver, and 10 bronze in a field of 21 teams participating in the competition in August.

The 37 Filipino youth athletes were supported by eight officials including the Secretary General of the Taekwondo Philippines Raul Samson, MILO, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the Philippine Sports Commission.

The 8 Gold Medalists in their respective classes in the Poomsae competition include:

  1. Ian Matthew Corton
  2. Joshua Aaron Erece
  3. Lucas Llarena
  4. Caleb Angelo Calde
  5. Dean Darnet Venerable
  6. Casey De Leon
  7. Acey Kiana Oglayon
  8. Juliana Martha Uy

Silver Medalist:

  1. Marie Nicole Anne Labayne

The 10 Bronze Medalists:

  1. Elizabeth Marie Borres
  2. Antonette Medallada
  3. Aesha Kiana Oglayon
  4. Cyrus Rodan Sinugbojan

“The Poomsae team did extremely well. Well, it is one of the first times again na nakapag face-to-face competition ang cadet at junior team natin,” said Stephen Fernandez, Chair for Regional Affairs of Philippine Taekwondo Association, in an interview with the state television PTV Sports.

He added, “Maganda ang performance actually, hinangaan yung team natin, sabi nga nila na napaka lakas ng juniors natin tulad ng senior team natin sa SEA Games kamakailan. The program is good.”

The Philippine Jins’ instructors are world champions from the national team.

Filipino jins have been winning competitions including one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals at the 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held in Goyang, South Korea. In pre-pandemic 2019 in the same country, the Philippine Jins brought home a total of 56 golds, 20 silvers, and 11 bronze medals.
