The historic Walled City of Intramuros in Manila, Philippines, has again been named Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction for the year 2022 and is vying for the world edition of the annual awards.
The Spanish colonial era structure reclaimed its title at this year’s 29th World Travel Awards (WTA) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Intramuros Manila was previously recognized by WTA as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2016 and 2020. It won the global edition of the awards as the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2020.
Intramuros prevailed over title contenders Angkor Temples in Cambodia, Borobudur Temple Compounds in Indonesia, Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, Sengan-en and Shoko Shuseikan Museum in Kagoshima in Japan, Taj Mahal in India, teamLab SuperNature in Macao, China’s Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and Terracotta Warriors, Tokyo Imperial Palace in Japan, and Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, in the WTA Asian Awards held on September 7.

On the same occasion, the Philippines was also recognized with two regional awards – Asia’s Leading Beach Destination and Asia’s Leading Dive Destination.
The London-based World Travel Awards (WTA), known as the “Oscars” of the travel industry, was founded in 1993 to recognize achievement in the travel and tourism sector on three levels: national, regional, and global awards in a variety of categories.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco expressed her gratitude for receiving such recognition.
“May this recognition remind us that all of us have a shared responsibility towards the success of the tourism industry, not only in our country but in Asia and the world,” Frasco said.
“We are ready to receive you in the Philippines. We look forward to your visit and I invite each and every one of you to visit our beaches, our dive sites, and our tourist destinations,” Secretary Frasco added.
The Intramuros Administration reopened its tourist attractions Fort Santiago and Baluarte de San Diego in May 2021.
