The Filipino Para athletes competed in sporting events such as archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, chess, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair basketball.
- Swimming brought in the most gold medals for the nation. Paralympian swimmer Ernie Gawilan and Roland Sabido gave the country its first pair of gold medals in the 11-nation regional meet.
- The Philippine team of Para swimmers added triple gold medals from Angel Otom and Ariel Alegarbes, who are both Asian Youth Para Games standouts.
- Chess players and track and field athletes also won gold medals for the country. Filipino chess player and FIDE Master Sander Severino emerged as the country’s most bemedaled athlete in the competition, winning four golds and two silvers to lead the 10-medal harvest of the Philippine chess team.
- Javelin thrower Cendy Asusano and Paralympian wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan led the way for the Philippines in athletics at this year’s Para Games, winning two gold medals each in their respective events.
Team Philippines bagged a total of 28 gold, 30 silver, and 46 bronze medals for a total of 104 medals, placing the country in fifth place out of 11 countries in the final medal standings dominated by host country Indonesia.
The Philippine team surpassed its gold medal haul in the 2017 edition of the regional games in Kuala Lumpur, as well as the country’s previous best effort in the biennial multi-sport event in 2009, also held in the Malaysian capital.
