A 66-year-old senior citizen from Catarman, Northern Samar, believes there’s still time to pursue her dreams after graduating from senior high school with honors.

Josie Isanan Balasta revealed her plans to pursue a college degree and has shared her story to inspire others to follow their dreams despite the obstacles.

Challenges such as poverty and losing her mother at a young age once prevented Nanay Josie from attending school. Although she had to overcome many obstacles, she was determined to go back to school and enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) to continue her education.

The ALS program provides out-of-school youth and adult learners in the country, like Balasta, with opportunities to develop their skills and finish basic education.

“Walang impossible sa taong may pangarap,” Jose Balasta said in a Facebook post shared by ALS Catarman IV District.

Balasta said that nothing is impossible to achieve with hard work and perseverance.

“Kung mayroon man akong ipagmamalaki sa sarili ko, ito ay ang paniniwala ko sa kahalagahan ng edukayon at ang motibasyon kong matuto.”

Balasta graduated with honors from Galutan National High School in July 2022. She revealed that she plans to enroll in college for the upcoming school year.

The grandmother dreams of completing her college education and hopes to become a working professional like her children.

Filipinos proving it’s never too late to follow one’s dreams include Edwin Salvador, a former security guard in Bulacan who fulfilled his dream of becoming a teacher at 45 years old, and 91-year-old Lolo Pedring who graduated from senior high school after years of putting his studies on hold.
