The Philippines’ champion Ernest John “EJ” Obiena has jumped three notches to No. 3 in the World Athletics ranking for Men’s Pole Vault, a new career-high for the only Asian and Filipino in the Top 10 of the list.
EJ Obiena brought the Philippine flag to the 3rd spot from the previous 6th place in the World ranking after his Asian record-breaking bronze medal and also the country’s first podium finish at the World Championships held in Oregon, U.S.A. in July 2022.
The 26-year-old Filipino athlete and Asia’s best pole vaulter recorded a score of 1408 in the World Athletics July 26 ranking to earn him the spot just behind Olympics medalists: 24-year-old Christopher Nilsen of the United States with 1435 in 2nd rank and 22-year-old Armand Duplantis of Sweden with 1612 in 1st rank. Obiena’s Overall Men’s Ranking in the top 100 is at #31.
Obiena’s prior best placement was at No. 5, a spot he earned after the Philippine national record-breaking silver-medal finish in the Paris Diamond League and his Tokyo Olympics debut in 2021.
By the end of 2021, EJ Obiena was named by World Athletics as the 3rd Best Pole Vaulter of the season after he broke the 23-year-old Asian record which he again reset at this year’s World Championships.
