The Philippines’ oldest Tagalog magazine, Liwayway, has brought back its print edition months ahead of turning 100 years old this 2022.
The iconic Filipino magazine whose name translates to “dawn” in English was first published in 1922 by Don Ramon Roces and gained literary cult status as it serialized novels, stories, and poetry by renowned local writers such as Jose Corazon de Jesus, Julian Cruz Balmaceda, Lualhati Bautista, Gilda Olvidado, Elena Patron, and Pablo Gomez, as well as serialized comics.
Liwayway magazine announced the return of its print edition in June a year after discontinuing the print edition in mid-2021 as it turned into a purely online publication. The copies are available at National Book Store and in selected convenience stores and newsstands, and bulk ordering at the Manila Bulletin.
(Let us support Filipino literature! Liwayway – which turns 100 years old this November – is the one and only magazine that publishes novels, stories, poems, and comics in Filipino. This is a platform for the youth with talent in the arts such as Ardie Aquino who created the cover of this issue.
Your support for Liwayway redounds to supporting the flourishing of the country’s arts. #NewDawn).
An American survey revealed that Tagalog and Ilocano are the top languages spoken in the U.S. aside from English and Spanish.
The Filipino language has been used in official transactions to mark National Language Month in August.
