Filipina author-illustrator Tori Tadiar has signed a three-book deal with Disney Books for her upcoming graphic novel series inspired by Philippine mythology, Highsummer.
The new trilogy to be released soon by Tadiar is a middle-grade series “set in a Filipiniana junior high school” featuring a young protagonist who can awaken ancient gods and creatures from Philippine lore.
The award-winning comic artist took to social media to excitedly share the announcement of her book deal with Disney Hyperion, the same publisher of the best-selling “Percy Jackson” series by Rick Riordan.
“So excited to finally share that my current comic project, HIGHSUMMER, will be published by Disney Books in 2024!” Tori Tadiar wrote in a social media post on June 3, 2022.
Tadiar shares that her new work, “Highsummer” will follow Mika, a 12-year-old student who finds herself working with former school bullies to help save the world
“In this series inspired by Philippine folklore and mythology, 12-year-old Mika tries to undo a curse she accidentally cast on two classmates-but when she awakens, ancient gods and a sun-devouring beast set on plunging the world into darkness, she must team up with her former bullies to save the world and all she holds dear,” Tadiar’s announcement for her new book series reads.

The first book in Tadiar’s debut middle-grade graphic novel series is set to be published by Disney Hyperion in 2024.
Tori Tadiar is a full-time IT professional based in Manila who works on illustrating and writing stories every chance she gets. Her goal is to be able to tell stories that are Filipiniana-inspired but are universally relatable.
Tadiar is the author of the acclaimed graphic novels “Twinkle Twinkle” and “Sagala” which won Best Komiks at the 2017 Komiket Awards and the 2020 PBBY-Alcala Prize. She is represented by Britt Siess Creative Management, a Seattle-based literary and illustration agency.
Award-winning Filipino graphic novel “Trese” by creators Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo was adapted by Netflix with an all-Filipino voice cast.
