Filipino scientist and diplomat Glenn Suerte Felipe Banaguas has won the 2022 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction in recognition of his active efforts in reducing disaster risks in communities.
The Founder and President of the Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute (ECCRI), was named among the six laureates of the prestigious prize chosen from over 200 nominations worldwide.
Banaguas won the third prize for Climate Smart Philippines, the flagship program of the ECCRI, which supports vulnerable communities in Southeast Asia by “building resilience and adapting to the climate change through sustainable practices.”
“I am humbled and honored. Thank you for selecting me as one of the UN Sasakawa Laureates. I will continue to be your partner in creating positive impacts in society. May God bless us all,” Glenn Banaguas wrote in a LinkedIn post.
The Filipino scientist and the other winners were announced during the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Bali, Indonesia on May 25, 2022.

This year, Quezon City-based child rights organization, Save the Children Philippines, also won an award for its innovative programs on disaster risk reduction and management for Filipino children.
Together with the World Health Organization Sasakawa Health Prize and the UN Environment Programme Sasakawa Environment Prize, the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction is one of three prestigious prizes established in 1986 by founding Chairman of the Nippon Foundation, Mr. Ryoichi Sasakawa.
The 2022 Sasakawa Award honors practices and efforts made by institutions, individuals, and groups that have best contributed to building resilience through a multi-hazard approach.
Filipino researchers earlier bagged top honors in the second Hitachi Global Foundation Asia Innovation Awards while the WONDERPETS all-girl student team of Batangas State University (BatStateU) bagged first place in the 2022 World Engineering Day Hackathon supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
