Filipino-American public servant Susana Reyes has been confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council as Commissioner of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works.
Susana Reyes, who became the first Filipina and retiree to serve on the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP)’s board of commissioners in June 2019 and thereafter served as its Vice President, will play a pivotal role on the Board of Public Works.
Reyes joins the five-member, full-time executive team that oversees the city’s projects and programs, such as construction and sanitation, among others, after she was unanimously confirmed to her new post by the City Council on April 27, 2022.
“Today, I was unanimously confirmed by the L.A. City Council and officially sworn in as a Commissioner of the Board of Public Works by the City Clerk. Thank you Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Council members for your trust and investment in my leadership,” Susana Reyes wrote in a LinkedIn post.
“I stand on the shoulders of other leaders who moved the needle on equity, justice, and sustainability,” Reyes added.
Prior to joining the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Board of Commissioners, Reyes served as the director of LADWP’s Low-Income Customer Access, where she worked to provide low-income ratepayers with access to financial assistance, discounts, and rebates.
In addition to being a public servant for over 32 years, Reyes is the founder and CEO of AgilEngines LLC, an advocacy and consulting firm focused on community outreach and civic engagement strategies.
“Susana is a selfless public servant who has spent her career building a more resilient and fair Los Angeles,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti of her nomination to the Board of Public Works in April. “Her strong commitment to equity, environmental justice, and public safety will make her a powerful addition to the Board of Public Works.”
Reyes also served on Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Sustainability team as a Senior Sustainability Analyst, where she helped oversee the implementation of Los Angeles’ first Sustainable City plan and helped secure a $1.7 million grant for the City from the California Air and Resources Board to help launch BlueLA, an EV car-sharing pilot program in low-income communities. Reyes is an active member of the Sierra Club, elected to the organization’s first-ever all-female Executive Committee in 2017.
Filipino-American women recently appointed to leadership positions under the administration of United States president Joe Biden include Ditas Katague, the new Associate Director of Communications at the U.S. Census Bureau, and Nani Coloretti, the new Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
