Ateneo leads Philippine schools in THE University Impact Rankings

Ateneo de Manila University continues to lead universities in the country as the top-ranked Philippine institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, the world’s only ranking measuring universities’ contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ateneo ranked the highest among 15 universities in the country that made it to the 2022 list, repeating its No. 1 placement as it debuted in the Philippines’ listing in the 2021 edition of THE Impact Rankings.

Ateneo is joined in the top three brackets of the Philippines’ higher education institutions by De La Salle University (DLSU) and Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) jointly in the Top 2, Central Luzon State University (CLSU), MapĂșa University (Mapua), University of Santo Tomas (UST), and Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) jointly in the Top 3 brackets.

  • Ateneo jumped to the 101-200 bracket, improving on its 201-300 bracket last year and securing the highest overall placement of any Philippine institution since the results table was inaugurated in 2019.
  • DLSU and MMSU are both ranked in the 401-600 bracket in the fourth edition of the global rankings.
  • CLSU, MapĂșa, UST, and TAU are placed in the 601-800 bracket in the annual rankings.

THE Impact Rankings, which measure educational institutions’ social and economic impact, ranked 1,406 universities from 106 different countries and regions in its latest edition released on April 27, 2022.

The annual publication of university rankings assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on four broad areas including research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Ateneo ranked high in the following SDGs:

  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: rank 48
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: 77
  • SDG 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: 101-200
  • SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals: 101-200

DLSU was ranked in the following SDGs:

  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation (101-200)
  • SDG 14 – Life Below Water (101-200)
  • SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and Production (201-300)
  • SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals (301-400)
  • SDG 1 – No Poverty (401-600)
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education (601-800)

MMSU was ranked in the following SDGs:

  • SDG 1 – No Poverty (201-300)
  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being (601-800)
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education (401-600)
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality (101-200)
  • SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy (101-200)
  • SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (401-600)
  • SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals (601-800)

The following are the 15 Philippine universities that were ranked in the 2022 list:

  1. Ateneo de Manila University in the 101-200 bracket, the highest-ranked Philippine institution in 2022
  2. De La Salle University in the 401-600 bracket
  3. Mariano Marcos State University in the 401-600 bracket
  4. Central Luzon State University in the 601-800 bracket
  5. MapĂșa University in the 601-800 bracket
  6. University of Santo Tomas in the 601-800 bracket
  7. Tarlac Agricultural University in the 601-800 bracket
  8. Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology in the 801-1000 bracket
  9. Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) in the 801-1000 bracket
  10. San Beda University in the 801-1000 bracket
  11. Visayas State University in the 801-1000 bracket
  12. University of Asia and the Pacific in the 1001+ bracket
  13. Cebu Technological University in the 1001+ bracket
  14. St Paul University Philippines in the 1001+ bracket
  15. Tarlac State University in the 1001+ bracket

In its inaugural edition in 2019, DLSU was the only university from the Philippines that made it to THE University Impact Rankings.

In 2020, four Philippine universities were included in the university rankings.
