Renewable energy expert Sara Jane Ahmed has made history as the first Filipina-Bangladeshi recipient of the Climate Breakthrough Award, the largest environmental award of its kind.

Ahmed joins this year’s historic all-women awardees of the Climate Breakthrough Project, a philanthropic organization that annually selects the most promising change-makers and leaders who are fighting climate change around the world.

The Filipina-Bangladeshi was recognized for her work as a financial advisor and strategist who seeks to develop resilience and investment opportunities in climate-vulnerable nations.

Ahmed is the founder of the Financial Futures Center and currently also serves as Finance Advisor to the Ministers of Finance from 55 of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries or the Vulnerable Twenty (V20) Group.

The global organization focused on climate change said the award is for Ahmed’s formulation of the Climate Prosperity Plan for V20 economies that are most exposed to climate-fueled risks.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the Climate Breakthrough Award from the Climate Breakthrough Project. It is certainly an amazing opportunity to elevate the Climate Prosperity Agenda of economies, helping mobilize finance to survive and thrive even on the frontline of the climate emergency,” said Sara Jane Ahmed in a press release on December 7, 2021.

First launched in 2016, the annual Climate Breakthrough Award is given to outstanding individuals who will also be provided funding and support for their cutting-edge climate change mitigation ideas.

As one of the awardees, Ahmed will receive three million US dollars to design and implement her breakthrough climate change strategy.

The two other award recipients this year are Denise Fairchild of the United States and Kathrin Gutmann of Germany.

Filipino social enterprise Liter of Light has won the Green Award for Energy in London for its low-cost easy way to make solar lamps.

Giant billboards of Solar Messages of Hope amplified Filipino voices calling for climate action as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) was hosted by Italy and the United Kingdom this year.
