Cebu City’s Beatrice Luigi Gomez brought the Philippines back into the Top 5 finalists of the Miss Universe pageant, spreading positive vibes among Filipino pageant fans during the coronation night held in Eilat, Israel.
The 26-year-old Filipina model and Philippine Navy reservist may not have won the country’s fifth Miss Universe crown but she also successfully continued the country’s 12-year uninterrupted semifinalist streak in the beauty tilt, the longest placement among Asian countries.
It was in 2018 when the Philippines last reached the Top 5 of the competition with Catriona Gray who eventually won the crown in that edition. Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu won the 2021 edition.
Beatrice wowed the audience and the selection committee, which included Filipina actress Marian Rivera, during the preliminary competitions on December 11 (Manila Time) and the finals night on December 13 (Manila Time) with her touted “silent killer walk”.
The Pinay beauty queen shined among 80 candidates from all over the world during the evening gown competition as she donned a red fiery gown in the preliminaries and a Visayan pintados-inspired gold gown in finals – both created by the world-renowned Filipino fashion designer, Francis Libiran.
On December 11, the communication arts student also made headlines and earned praises for showcasing the Philippine art and culture in her national costume inspired by the Bakunawa, the large serpent from the Philippine mythology which is said to have devoured the moons.
During the Question-and-Answer segment for the Top 5 finalist, Beatrice was asked about her stand on mandating a universal vaccination passport.
The Pinay pageant representative answered: “I believe that public health is everyone’s responsibility and to mandate vaccine and inoculation is necessary.
“And if mandating vaccine passport would help us in regulating and the rollouts of vaccine and mitigate the situation of the pandemic today then I would agree on mandating the necessary passport of vaccination.”
Gomez joins these Filipina beauty queens who landed at least semifinals spot in the Miss Universe pageant for 12 consecutive years:
