De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) student animation film “IAMANNIKA” has won the Southeast Asia Audience Award at the recently concluded CRAFT International Animation Festival in Indonesia.
The Filipino animated short film was declared the winner of the award and competed amongst 19 short films in the online festival held from October 25 until October 30, 2021.
Directed by Benilde Digital Film student Dan Verzosa under Tuklaw Films, the film follows the story of Annika, a grade school student who comes across a school activity that deals with society’s expectations of women.
“Amidst the pandemic, Annika, a 10-year old student attending her online class, came across a school requirement pertaining to women. As she does her school work she pondered upon society’s expectation of women alongside her mother, who she highly looked up to,” reads the IAMANNIKA film synopsis.
Established in 2017, the CRAFT International Animation Festival is “a celebration of craftsmanship and talent, but also to commune with authenticity, diversity, and physicality.”
Another Pinoy animated short film “Ang Lihim ni Lea” has won nine prestigious international awards for its brave take on the issue of child sexual abuse, while the Pangasinan student film “Sa Layag ng Bangkang Paurong” (The Boats That Sail Backwards) won an award at the Fresh International Film Festival in Ireland.
