The Philippine national powerlifting team has brought home a total of 4 golds, 2 silvers, and 5 bronze medals in the recently concluded World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Halmstad, Sweden.
Young Filipina powerlifter Veronica Ompod from Matag-ob, Leyte led the medal haul of the national team in the age group events held from September 23 until October 3, 2021.
Ompod bagged four gold medals in the 43kg women’s junior division while Jane Erasmo, also from Leyte, won four bronzes in the 47kg sub-junior class of the event.
Filipino powerlifter Agustin Lorenzo benched 147.5 kg on his third attempt to secure a silver medal in the men’s 74kg sub-junior division.
In the World Open, Joyce Gail Reboton made a historic victory for the Philippines by claiming a silver and a bronze medal in the women’s 76kg open division.
Reboton captured a silver in the bench press and a bronze in the total to become the first Filipino to win a medal in the World Open total in Classic Powerlifting, according to the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines (PAP).
She is also the second Filipino to win a medal in any World Open total after powerlifting legend Lily Pecante won the historic bronze in the Open total at the 2009 World Open Powerlifting Championships.
Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history by delivering the Philippines’ first-ever gold in the Olympics after 97 years.
