Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Villages and a Floating Resort City are being eyed by Filipino-led social enterprises to revive sustainable tourism livelihood.
The Friends of Cities project called “SDG Villages” aims to build a community that localizes most if not all of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
A floating resort city is proposed to be the flagship in Basilan, at the Southern tip of the Philippines, which shares waters with Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The Sustainable Floating Cities offer an adaptation strategy that upscale traditional houseboats to high‑tech innovations that involve up reducing plastic waste, the use of natural energy, and food technologies like hydroponics and aquaculture.
The project is proposed as coastal cities are on the frontlines of climate change in the country. Almost 90 percent of the largest cities are vulnerable to rising sea levels.
The SDG Villages and Floating Resort City was presented at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) from June 2-5, 2021, the biggest in-person international economic forum where a total of 13,000 participants from 140 countries came.
Initial conversations have begun with the local government, UN Habitat, and the Center for International Promotion, Russia.
The SDG Cities has gained the support of Friends for Leadership, an international network of next-generation young leaders along with AsiaTV team producer Regine Guevara and director Rhadem Musawah.
Rethink Plastic Co is another partner dedicated to looking into the country’s plastic pollution problem while working with tourism players to look at smart solutions for the future of cities on the coasts.
Filipino-born global solar-lighting movement Liter of Light has been creating Solar energy-powered giant UN SDG logos to encourage climate heroism in the Philippines.
