Filipino Australian handball player Bevan Calvert has been awarded the Sports Medal by the New South Wales (NSW) Premier for his service to the sport.

The top honors for Calvert was announced on March 19, 2021, by the NSW Government as part of the Premier’s Multicultural Community Medals.

Minister for Multiculturalism Geoff Lee congratulated Bevan for his incredible contributions to the sport of handball and as a role model in multicultural communities.

“Bevan is an elite athlete that represents Australia at the highest level. He has been a pioneer in the sport, achieving many firsts for Australia in handball,” Minister Lee said.

“Importantly, Bevan is also a beloved role model for the Australian Filipino community in NSW, inspiring young people from all backgrounds to play the sport,”
the NSW official added.

Bevan’s Filipino mother Violi Calvert said Bevan was honoured to be recognised by the NSW Government.

“Bevan is a proud Australian Filipino who has always been proud of his background and heritage. He has never lost sight of who he is or where he comes from,” Calvert’s mother said.

“Bevan passes on his passion for handball to young people and continues to be a role model to youth in our community.

“I could not be more proud of my son’s achievements and that he has been recognised as this year’s Sports Medal winner.”

Calvert’s first handball club was TSV Altenholz where he stayed for five seasons. His second club was Mecklenburger Schwerin. He then joined THW Kiel2 as Player and Assistant Coach; at which time he got ‘seconded’ to THW Kiel, Germany’s Champion Team.

More Fil-Aussies embracing their heritage while making their mark in the sporting world include Xantheia Pennisi, the first Filipino to compete in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and the champion basketball team, Zamboanga Valientes.
